Because we're nerds wherever we go.

Physics at the dinner table. Macaroni Grill is the best, if not for the food at least for the ability to draw out inventions whenever the mood strikes.

Bestest Friends

Last night I took a break from sewing and dove into another thing I like to do: painting. I made a collection of painted wooden dolls for my girls almost two years ago. I call them Bestest Friends Dolls. They still love them.

I have probably two dozen of these little girls in various stages in a drawer in my sewing desk. I pull them out when I want a new project. They're made of a single wood turning. I hand paint them using non-toxic paints and finish them with a non-toxic varnish.

One thing I love about these girls is that each one is completely different from another. Though some are similar.

I love the rainbow of color on their dresses and the varied hues of their faces. Each is diverse, something that's hard to find in a lot of mainstream toys.

The new three I am almost done with only have eyes, not mouthes. My girls aren't too sure if they like this or not. I think it's great, that way they can decide the feelings of each as they play.

They're by no means perfect. It's tremendously hard to paint teeny on rounded surfaces, but I did my best and am pleased with each for their own reasons. It makes me happy to give my kids the variation in their toys. I hope it will blend into their lives. That they'll see the beauty in every person. That, while they might not look the same as them, they'll grow up to have a bestest friend.

That's not homeschooling. Oh, wait...

Before anyone says it...yes, I know one of the kids is still in pj's while we're homeschooling. I don't really encourage dressing on days when we're not going out and there's noone visiting. It creates more laundry. Don't judge.

I just wanted to share with you another facet of homeschooling; it happens everywhere and anywhere. Like the kitchen floor. I'm not exactly sure why they decided this would be the place to do some art. They have desks of their own, though they're a bit small, and the dining room table too but this day they decided to triangulate here. Each equipped with their own project.

Perhaps it's was because they could spread out. Discarding their scraps any ol' place around them.

Or maybe because it made collaborating just a bit easier.

Whatever the reason, when I see stuff like this I have to take a deep breath, quell that inner freak that thinks they should be at name-labeled desks (we used to have them) sitting quietly (they're listening to The Avett Brothers whom I'm currently obsessed with) creating something that has step-by-step directions and looks the same as everyone elses (I'm actually not sure what they ended up doing).

Then, I have to reassure that institutionalized freak that they are, in fact, learning. They're cooperating. They're talking nicely to each other. Doing that socialization thing everyone is so hopped up about. They're appreciating music and experiencing sounds of different instruments (they play a wicked banjo and Livi loves the banjo). They're creating, imagining, using scissors (fine motor skills) and tape (that's mixed media, ya know), sharing and doing something they love, not something I forced them to do.

Sometimes, learning is just all in how you look at life. At least, I'm learning that.

Following artistic callings

So today's posting is just something I've been pondering for awhile and thought I'd share. I've been thinking about artists. What makes people artists?

I know from my own personal experience that creating things is just part of who I am. I have to have an outlet. Whether or not I excel at that art is moot. I just have to follow what I've been inspired to do. No matter the time or place. Many times I'll just seek out a pen and paper to put down what has attacked my brain and maybe later I'll look it at and develop it. I've been known to wake up at night to jot down a stanza or idea or sketch something out. That's when the muse just happens to throw me an idea. Other times, it's a full out compulsion, hours upon hours are spent on these thoughts and time slips by me unawares.

I've dabbled in painting, sewing, fiber arts, sketching, writing, and cooking. Some I've excelled at and continued, others just mediocre, a passing fancy. When the feeling hits me that I have to, that tiny spark of creation is inside me, I have to let it out. It's almost a compulsion. If I don't have the ability to create when I need or want to I actually feel emotionally bad. I'm irritable and cranky.

I wonder if this is how it is for others? Does a muse overcome them and practically force creativity to flow through them? Does an artist have to have angst to create? I seem to feel most creative when I have turmoil in my life. The plethora of drawing and painting and poetry I did as a teen was my most artistically productive and most emotionally scarred time so far in my life (so far). While all of the paintings are gone, I do still have some of the works of poetry and drawings. Looking back, it seems almost like a completely different person did it, though I do remember with painful clarity the exact times I composed some of those writings.

Maybe that's what I felt the compulsion to do; to form a portal on paper to a world I left behind. Even if at the time I had no realization that was what I was doing. When I look back now, I remember things about my situation and surroundings with more clarity than I had being in it at the time. I am able to sort out my responsibility in what happened and know that I survived that life and was able to forge a new one.

Though I've been able to create art through love, most of those things have been specific for a certain person, mostly my children. Those times they have been my muses and I revel not in the relief of creation but from the happiness I create for them with my art. It's a different muse that directs those crafts. These types I can pick up and put down at my leisure. Still sating the need for creativity, but not the hot, firey compulsion that sometimes hits me. I wonder if that's the same for others?

A few weeks ago, a muse threw at me the plot for a story, enveloping some of my own experiences into the mix. It happened at about ten one night and I've been called back to that muse many times over, spending hours and hours at the computer writing into the wee part of the night. Whether or not the story is any good, if anyone else would want to read it isn't the most important part, though I would like to share my art with others, it's just the act of creation.

So to those of you out there that have a desire or even a raw need to create, I ask you, where does your inspiration come from?

Cafemom at Etsy.com

I am proud to be counted among a wonderful group of mother artists. I met these fine ladies on Cafemom.com and from there our kids have been growing as well as our Etsy.com stores. It's just amazing to see these fantastic moms sharing advice and support along with our handmade items. It's so much work raising a family and yet somehow we find the time to hunker down with our crafts and create items from ourselves. Possibly, this is the only way we keep our sanity :P

Please check us out and consider supporting an Artist Mother!
